Sportsfile photographers took home 5 awards from the PPAI AIB Photojournalism Awards.

Ray McManus Wins World Press Award

Sportsfile founder and photographer Ray McManus has added a prestigious World Press Award to his trophy cabinet. His photo ‘Scrum Half’ taken in heavy rain of muddy action between Old Belvedere and Blackrock in February 2011 won second prize in the Sports Singles’ category of the 55th World Press Photo Contest.

Ray described receiving the award as ‘probably the best day of my career’. The award sees his name added to a long list of outstanding photographers, which includes Steve McCurry, Eddie Adams and Sebastião Salgado as well as two other Sportsfile names Paul Mohan and Pat Murphy who won World Press awards in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

‘Scrum Half’ was taken on 5th February 2011 during the Ulster Bank All-Ireland League Division 1A game between Old Belvedere and Blackrock College RFC. Ray’s other photos from that award winning day can be viewed here.

Britton Takes Home the Gold in Slovenia

Fionnuala Britton, from Kilcoole A.C., Co. Wicklow, stormed home to win gold at the 18th SPAR European Cross Country Championships 2011, in Velenje, Slovenia, yesterday. After losing out on a podium position last year, Britton was determined to snatch a medal this time around. It’s Ireland’s second ever gold in the Women’s Senior event following Catherina McKiernan’s victory, in the first race, 17 years ago.

Sportsfile’s Stephen McCarthy was on hand to deliver gold standard photography for Monday’s papers.

All-Star Coverage for Watson and Fitzgerald

Sportsfile’s Ray McManus joined the 2010 and 2011 GAA-GPA Hurling All-Stars as they jetted off to San Francisco for their exhibition match at Treasure Island. Antrim’s Liam Watson, who lined out on the 2011 team, had the lion’s share of the column inches following a mix up with US immigration and for his on pitch display, appearing in the Irish Daily Star, The Irish Times, The Irish News and the Irish Independent on Friday 2nd and in the Irish Daily Star and the Irish Independent on Tuesday 6th. The 2011 team manager and newly appointed Clare boss Davy Fitzgerald found himself the center of attention in Saturday’s Irish Examiner, Irish Independent and The Irish Times as he looked ahead to the road that awaits him in the Banner.

Diarmuid’s Whiskers Raise Over €1k for Irish Cancer Society

Congratulations to Sportsfile’s ‘Undercover Brother’ Diarmuid Greene who has so far raised €1,200 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society by carefully cultivating a facial hair masterpiece.

Diarmuid’s ‘Mo’, scheduled for shaving in early December, was part of the global phenomenon ‘Movember’ where men grow mustaches of various styles in order to raise money for selected charities in the month of November.

Also lending their faces to the cause was a number of Irish sports personalities, you can make up your own mind as to who is sporting the most mo-tastic tache.

Historic Game in Croker ‘cops’ a lot of Coverage

Croke Park, which is no stranger to historical occasions, welcomed the PSNI onto its pitch on Friday for the McCarthy match against An Garda Síochána in one of the most significant games in recent memory. As the police services from both sides of the border swapped their uniforms for jerseys it was the southerners who reigned supreme with a comprehensive 4-17 to 1-6 victory but this match was about much more than the end result. Sportsfile’s Ray McManus was there to capture the occasion and in addition to the front page of the Irish Examiner Ray’s pictures appeared in the Irish Daily Star, The Irish Sun, The Irish Times and The Irish News. Definitely a case of ’see you all in Coppers’
